Lee Kuan Yew, and the other Foreign Minister also socialise with westerner. I do not hear them changing to foreign accent. But the westener still buy their ideas and come to Singapore to do business, and created the opportunity for you and me to go to school.
Now you want to what? Speak with Kan Tang? ok. . .
Hum. . . let me continue to listen to Uncle Lee Kuan Yew Speech. Wonder why so many white man want to hear from him. . . . hum. . .

Well there are many ways. I tihnk your english is very good already so reading books and wathcing movies is really a good idea. I’d get some movies with subtitles though so you can read what the people are saying (americans talk too fast sometimes). Another good hint might be chatting for example an ICQ chatroom or maybe yahoo has english speaking chats as well.

I am curious about why you are looking to have a “North American” accent. Do you mean as opposed to a British accent? Instead of trying to ‘get’ an accent, I would recommend concentrating on improving your spoken English. As others have said, television, movies, etc are great for exposure to North American English.
Again, unless your English is already very advanced, I would caution against trying to emulate an accent. The book and audio cassette, “Well Said” by Linda Grant , is a great resource for advanced learners.
I have been teaching ESL for over 10 years, and it is my favorite.

The best way for you to acquire an American accent would of course be to live among Americans for some time. If this is not possible, try to associate with Americans in the place you live as much as you can.
